Chiyo is constantly struggling to escape from Hatsumomos grasp, but eventually she will get her revenge. The author uses imagery to convey the idea that Hatsumomo was abusing her power and status to bully others.

In this instance you can see how Hatsumomo is taking her anger out on someone instead of confronting it herself. The author writes “Hatsumomo smiled when she was happy, like everybody else and she was never happier than when she was about to make someone suffer.” (Golden 3415). Now that Chiyo is going to a geisha school, Hatsumono starts showing her true colors. She fears that Chiyo has potential as a popular geisha and might push her to the sidelines. In the society of the Japanese town Gion, Hatsumomo is considered one of the best geishas. Sometimes when people fear, they decide to take it out on others.

The protagonist Chiyo is having a harder time achieving Geisha status, because of another geisha named Hatsumomo. A Geisha is a Japanese woman that is trained to entertain men with conversation, dance, and song. Imagine a life where every step of your life is monitored by your enemy.The Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden shows the everyday struggle of an apprentice geisha. He was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame in 2000, and was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004. With 45 Academy Award nominations, Williams is, together with composer Alfred Newman, the second most nominated individual after Walt Disney. He has also won 4 Golden Globes, 7 BAFTA Awards and 10 Grammy Awards. Williams is a five-time winner of the Academy Award. He served as the principal conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993, and is now the orchestra's laureate conductor.
